Micro-hike and Micro-farm

Well we made it back from our trip up Dog Mountain (referred to in a hiking book we’ve recently bought as “one of the least technically difficult summits in BC, if not the world). We arrived at about 7:50 on Saturday morning and managed to get a parking space. The walk up through the snow was lots of fun and wasn’t too busy. There were plenty of people, dogs and hungry avian locals at the top though. Rosie was extremely annoyed that she forgot to bring fruit or nut based snacks for the whiskey jacks and opportunistic ravens. On the way back down it was getting much busier and we felt smug about our early start. We were back at the car in time for second breakfast.

The rest of our Saturday was less of a success. We had grand plans of another easy walk around the inlet at Port Moody, followed by a trip to a few breweries nearby. However, we hadn’t considered the consequences of the province recently relaxing COVID restrictions to allow people to meet up with friends in an outdoor setting. All of the breweries had outdoor patios… and very long queues. We gave up and went back home for pizza instead.

During the week, we re-set our hydroponic mini-garden and took the opportunity to make this highly informative video to entertain and educate our followers:

If you’re not sick of Rosie’s face after that, then I guess you never will be! Now we have a bottle of BC red to finish and another rainy weekend to plan… See you next time!

  1. When I run out of feed for my micro-electronic grow-o-matic garden, Nellie makes a small donation and we use two caps full of that.

  2. Glad to see that the crampons have come in use. Looks like a nice walk even is it was sooooo easy. I hope that view and all the snow wasnt too dull.

I have one thing to say about the micro-garden…. TIMELAPSE. (Extra points if they all have Rosie’s face in)

  3. I am both entertained and educated! Excellent cinematography, my complements to the obviously seasoned veteran camera crew.

  4. Deer Tongue! Deer Tongue? If you plant that you may find a deer drinking from your hydroponics…..
You are showing me up with your crystal clear bird pics: Chestnut backed Chickadee (much better name than tit) and look at that purple sheen on that Raven!
Wood Ducks seem to prefer the area south of Fraser River as far as Popkurn in the east, including The Sanctuary south of Vancouver where there are about 40 “mainly among the tall Douglas Firs of East and North Dykes where there are shallow sloughs with overhanging branches to roost in”. But don’t wander into the USA. Also a few in Stanley Park, NW of Vancouver.

    1. We are very curious to see what the Deer Tongue turns out like! Thanks for the identifications! Chickadee is more fun to say, but there aren’t as many rude jokes you can make. The ravens were particularly beautiful. Ollie was a bit scared of them though. Speaking of which, there have been several coyote attacks in Stanley park recently… So I’m not sure Ollie will be up for a wood duck hunt there. Perhaps he’d prefer to drive me to that sanctuary, it’s only an hour away.

  5. I’m a bit late catching up with your posts….but love the views from Dog mountain (Ziggy was very pleased that there is such a thing in Canada – land!). Just wonder why Ollie is up to his knees in snow? Also impressed with the view of your house and all the tall buildings look like they’re arranged in a big circle with all the smaller buildings inside…very striking! Off to read your next 2 posts now…..Oh, and loved the video, especially Rosie’s lovely face xx
